〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Lan Jingyi
CHARACTER AGE: 19
SERIES: The Untamed (Netflix Series) | Mo Dao Zu Shi (Original Novel)
CHRONOLOGY: Post-canon
CLASS: Hero
HOUSING: May I request random housing with random people? :)

BACKGROUND: Lan Jingyi’s History + other tabs that have his relationships, etc. Jingyi is just minor enough of a character that the wiki basically references every scrap of dialogue he has in the whole novel so it’s...comprehensive.

PERSONALITY:
In a single sentence
Lan Jingyi feels everything a lot all the time, and those emotions/thoughts will pop out immediately as either words or actions.

Loud, careless, blunt, hot-tempered, irreverent, unignorable, zero Brain-to-Mouth filter
He is loud, unafraid of raising his voice to ask a question or interrupt someone. If he wants to know he wants to know, and he operates under, ‘If I don’t ask, then nobody will tell me,’ even if the question might be embarrassing or making someone uncomfortable. He says precisely what he’s thinking and/or feeling at any given moment, and only his higher priority of not losing face for his sect or his mentors can make him hold his tongue (look, Hanguang-Jun is the best and that’s just a fact, he doesn’t make the rules). He doesn’t mind selectively chucking his sect rules by the wayside when inconvenient, though he doesn’t run wild just to run wild, it’s just that he’s a little bit of out-of-sight, out-of-mind and if nobody’s around to care, then he doesn’t either. He does not suffer from any self-pressure to conform. He’s also actually surprisingly perceptive, it’s just that his mouth runs about ten or twenty seconds faster than his brain does, and if he’s sat down and held still, he can put his ability to observe to work. This mix of traits does make him a little bit Captain Obvious sometimes.

Honest, loyal, genuine, kind, follower, trusting, decisive
His core positive traits are honesty, loyalty, and kindness. This interacts with his frankness in that he comes across as very genuine and, as a result, takes other people very much at face value too, looking directly to their actions (primarily) and their words (secondarily) to make his judgements of them. Because of this, he’s weirdly fearless of people, especially once they’ve acted on his behalf, even if they’re supposed to be bad guys. If he’s ever a leader of anything, it’s because he’s been forced into it or he’s the only one who spoke up and was therefore listened to. He likes to take action, whether it’s drawing a sword or offering his blood, and overall he’s impulsive for great justice, often in the name of assisting or supporting someone. He’d much rather assist someone who is brilliant at a thing than try and do it himself and not do as well.

Emotional, romantic, scared of ghosties, curious, credulous
Jingyi feels his emotions very loudly and clearly, though most of the time they’re not particularly complex. He’s honest enough with himself and able to express himself most of the time immediately (or soon after), that not a lot ever gets bottled up. He’s also a romantic, and very compassionate when it comes to empathizing with people and their stories. He’s terribly curious about all the things, even and especially stories he’s being told, which makes him pretty much a perfect audience because he’ll gasp in the right place and ask all the questions and be very responsive. (And, as a side note, he’s also terribly curious about demonic cultivation, but sort of in the ‘ooo, a taboo thing!’ sort of way, especially because he thinks Wei Wuxian is extremely cool.) He’s also terrified of ghosties, partially because he doesn’t have a lot of experience with them, and partially because he just thinks they’re spooky, and he’s not afraid to try and wiggle his way out from interacting with them (and his emotional heights means he’s very scared of them until he’s not).

POWER:

Golden Core Cultivation
What it is: The Untamed is set in the cultivation world, which is a high-fantasy version of Ancient China. Cultivation revolves around the training and manipulation of spiritual energy/chi ala Taoism/Buddhism. Cultivators often form large, family-like groupings of masters and students called sects, and focus on martial and spiritual achievement in order to fill their cultural role to protect everyone else from spirits and demons. Aaannd also to maybe become immortal and be badass.
Where the “golden core” of Golden Core Cultivation factors into this is as a representation of a critical-mass point at which spiritual energy in an individual coalesces into a metaphysical Thing (that can be, for example, transferred or crushed). This becomes the center/source of all of the wild magic shenanigans that cultivators get up to. Core formation seems to happen more-or-less at the mid-teens for those who have both appropriate instruction and a sense of drive (and happens later otherwise). Spiritual energy is innate to the body it’s housed in; there are mundane individuals and cultivators, and among cultivators their initial foundation of spiritual energy influences how much an individual can ultimately achieve.
What this means: Lan Jingyi, with his golden core, will stay young and hot for a good long time, and his general modus operandi is to meditate and do various other activities to amp up his spiritual energy and physical capabilities over time so that he can use it to do stuff with 1) his own body and 2) the tools he uses.
Note: Lan Jingyi is a B-average junior disciple of the GusuLan, still learning the ropes of his chosen calling. He’s more good-solid as a cultivator, as opposed to good-talented, and he prefers to champion those who are more highly skilled than he is in situations where it matters.
Golden Core Related Skills & Abilities
Extreme Athletics—having spiritual energy allows the cultivator to jump ridiculously high and far, dodge like a boss, lift significant amounts of weight, and turn on the speed. Without spiritual energy, a cultivator is still a highly-trained athlete, but when there is spiritual energy, this looks like the wirework in wuxia novels/films. (Parameters for game, synced with other apps: leap up roughly two stories, leap out about 40-60ft, lift a large person one-handed (as a Lan, he’s slightly buffer, b/c handstands), and dodge sneak attacks.)
Physical Robustness—having a golden core also makes a cultivator more physically robust than mundane people. They heal faster, live longer, and have greater stamina as well as higher pain and shock tolerance. Spiritual energy makes this go, so when depleted these benefits will lessen or fail. (Parameters for game, synced with other apps: heal at about 4x average human rate, physically ages about 4x slower, and is not incapacitated by physical trauma but still feels every bit of the pain.)
Spiritual Energy Transfer—cultivators can transfer raw spiritual energy to bolster someone else’s body and spirit. This can prevent death (keep someone at 1hp, essentially), stabilize injuries, boost the body’s natural healing, or bring mental clarity. This works better on others with a golden core as their bodies already know what to do with spiritual energy. Can be used either in dire straights or for other reasons if the other person needs more spiritual energy to work with for a spell or technique.
GusuLan Sword Techniques—the GusuLan work hard to instill proper swordwork and martial techniques in their disciples, so at the foundation, Jingyi knows his way around a weapon. When spiritual energy techniques are applied, a sword can also be telekinetically controlled as well as used as a vector to throw spiritual energy attacks/shockwaves. Also you can fly on the sword (slower than an airplane, faster than a horse). You just. Stand on them. And fly. (Parameters for game, synced with other apps: range 30ft and line of sight/line of effect for both telekinesis and shockwaves, can fly with one average-sized passenger for two hours, alone for five hours, and none of any of this works if he’s out of juice.)
GusuLan Guqin Techniques—the GusuLan sect, because their founder was a musician, specialize in techniques where music is imbued with spiritual energy, and their instrument of choice is the guqin (a type of seven-stringed instrument/zither), though other types of instruments work as well. When imbued, various songs have various effects. Jingyi knows the basic principles of some of them, but he’s not very good at any of them—yet, at least—and usually opts for other methods. (Known songs—Chord Assasination (shockwave 20ft, shorter and stronger than using his sword), Song of Clarity (assists in meditation, clears the mind of agitation or confusion), Calm (eases resentful energy in ghosts, the walking dead, and the living), Evocation (calls the souls of the dead or near-dead, mostly to prepare for Inquiry), Inquiry (speak with the souls of the dead or near-dead using a musical language of Qin, where each note represents a particular character).)
Talisman Creation—talismans are spiritual energy-imbued sigils that can inspire various effects. They can be drawn (on paper or cloth) with ink, blood, or even thread and subsequently imbued. They can also be drawn in the air directly with spiritual energy and then flung. The effect is proportional to the spiritual energy (or resentful energy, tho Jingyi is not allowed to use resentful energy, because that’s demonic cultivation) used, and their versatility and sometimes low spiritual energy requirements means they can be created without a golden core or imbued ahead of time so that anyone can use them. They can attract/repel ghosties and other creatures, directly protect someone from ghosties and other creatures, calm or agitate ghosties and other creatures, detect presences in designated areas, and set things on fire. Jingyi does not often remember to use talismans, but he can both use and create them. (Parameters for game, synced with the other apps: duration of 30m, radius/throwing range of 30ft, touch-activated, single-use)

Quiankun Pouch
Essentially a small bag of holding/spatial storage item that looks like fancy bag about the size of a loaf of bread. Can hold up to five cubic feet of material (non-living only), or up to 200lbs or 20 items. Contains:
* One set of GusuLan junior disciple cultivator robes with head-ribbon. Sewn with single-use protective talisman stitching good against an undead or corrupt-type attack.
* One small bundle of pre-created talismans ( Two “Are There Ghosties Right Here With Me In This Radius?”, five “Firelighters,” three “Repel Minor Ghosts,” and one “Signal Flare Call For Help.” All basically cantrip-level in d&d terms.)
* One cultivator’s magic sword. This allows use of the GusuLan Sword Techniques. The sword was made specifically for Jingyi and is attuned to his golden core. Like the martial arts and strength, the sword’s use is based upon the cultivator’s inherent magic, and it can be controlled entirely telekinetically. It’s limited by his own golden core power and his own sword skill levels, but it can essentially fight on its own.
* Compass of Evil. Points toward the greatest source of resentful energy (ie strongest ghost) or the strongest monster.

〈 CHARACTER SAMPLES 〉
COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:

[Jingyi’s smiling face enters the frame after the view bobbles around a little. His forehead ribbon is slightly crooked (for shame), and his cheeks are flushed, but he otherwise appears triumphant.]

I escaped!

[He turns the camera on his communicator around and sticks it out past the corner of a building he’s hiding behind. Beyond is one of the normal crowds who pester imPorts for pictures and signatures. Jingyi is certainly not a celebrity and it is very strange to be treated like one]

Look at them!

[Back to Jingyi’s baffled smile.]

This happens for everyone? Do you know why?

FINAL NOTES:
1. So, I have the Untamed listed as Jingyi’s canon, and for the purpose of canonmates and categorization, I think categorizing him from the Untamed is my preferred option. The series is very faithful and all the relationships all remain intact. However, I am playing Jingyi from the tail end of book canon after all of the short-story extras (because I wanted Jingyi to have experienced one(1) good grade in his life) and prefer to default to book canon where there is minor conflict between the two versions.
2. Fun cute thing: gusumouthcannon comes from a really funny trivia reality gameshow episode the actors were in and Lan Jingyi was the answer for the clue ‘Gusu’s #1 Mouthcannon.’

FINAL FINAL NOTE (re: acceptance note) Clarification: Jingyi will be pulled from book canon as his primary source. :)
