OVER 18? Very. (Yes.)
CHARACTERS IN-GAME: None.
▶ CHARACTER
NAME: Lan Jingyi
CANON: Mo Dao Zu Shi
CANON POINT: Post-canon, after extras. MoM CRAU up to the beginning of May 2020.
AGE: 18
BACKGROUND:
Canon: Lan Jingyi’s History! (The wikipage is comprehensive, as Jingyi is just minor enough that it references every scrap of dialogue he has.)
CRAU: I’d like to give Jingyi about three months of his experience at Mask or Menace, roughly from mid-Feb to the beginning of May. The purpose of his CRAU is to basically skip him past some of the fish-out-of-water stuff w/r/t modern life and allow him to know about other worlds and the various people he has had contact with. As for relationships, I’d like him to assume he’s met ‘other versions’ of various characters (based on the idea of Prisma’s doubles) and as such does not assume anything. If meeting a character he knows from CRAU, I’d only want him to retain knowledge of revealed backstory and/or consider them the same person if requested by the other player.
PERSONALITY:
Loud, blunt, hot-tempered, irreverent, unignorable, zero Brain-to-Mouth filter
He is loud, unafraid of raising his voice to ask a question or interrupt someone or call them out. If he wants to know then he wants to know, and he operates under, ‘If I don’t ask, then nobody will tell me,’ even if the question might be embarrassing or making someone uncomfortable. He says precisely what he’s thinking and/or feeling at any given moment, and only his higher priority of not losing face for his sect or his mentors can make him hold his tongue (look, Hanguang-Jun is the best and that’s just a fact, he doesn’t make the rules). He doesn’t mind selectively chucking his sect rules by the wayside when inconvenient, though he doesn’t run wild just to run wild. It’s just that he’s a little bit of out-of-sight, out-of-mind and if nobody’s around to care, then he doesn’t either. He does not suffer from any self-pressure to conform. He’s also surprisingly perceptive, it’s just that his mouth runs about ten or twenty seconds faster than his brain does, and if he’s sat down and held still, he can put his ability to observe to work. This mix of traits does make him a little bit Captain Obvious sometimes.
Honest, loyal, genuine, kind, follower, trusting, decisive
His core positive traits are honesty, loyalty, and kindness. This interacts with his frankness in that he comes across as very genuine and, as a result, takes other people very much at face value too, looking directly to their actions (primarily) and their words (secondarily) to make his judgements of them. Because of this, he’s weirdly fearless of people, especially once they’ve acted on his behalf, even if they’re supposed to be bad guys. If he’s ever a leader of anything, it’s because he’s been forced into it or he’s the only one who spoke up and was therefore listened to. He likes to take action, whether it’s drawing a sword or offering his blood, and overall he’s impulsive for great justice, often in the name of assisting or supporting someone. He’d much rather assist someone who is brilliant at a thing than try and do it himself and not do as well.
Emotional, romantic, scared of ghosties, curious, credulous
Jingyi feels his emotions very loudly and clearly, though most of the time they’re not particularly complex. He’s honest enough with himself and able to express himself most of the time immediately (or soon after), that not a lot ever gets bottled up. He’s also a romantic, and very compassionate when it comes to empathizing with people and their stories. He’s terribly curious about all the things, even and especially stories he’s being told, which makes him pretty much a perfect audience because he’ll gasp in the right place and ask all the questions and be very responsive. (And, as a side note, he’s also terribly curious about demonic cultivation, but sort of in the ‘ooo, a taboo thing!’ sort of way, especially because he thinks Wei Wuxian is extremely cool.) He’s also terrified of ghosties, partially because he doesn’t have a lot of experience with them, and partially because he just thinks they’re spooky, and he’s not afraid to try and wiggle his way out from interacting with them (and his emotional heights means he’s very scared of them until he’s not).
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Jingyi’s powers and abilities, as a cultivator, mostly stem from his golden core, though he has also been instructed in the six arts. So he knows how to draw and sing, shoot stuff with a bow and act with propriety, ride a horse and do math. With the spiritual energy from his golden core, he also possesses:
Extreme Athletics—having spiritual energy allows the cultivator to jump ridiculously high and far, dodge like a boss, lift significant amounts of weight, and turn on the speed. Without spiritual energy, a cultivator is still a highly-trained athlete, but when there is spiritual energy, this looks like the wirework in wuxia novels/films.
Physical Robustness—having a golden core also makes a cultivator more physically robust than mundane people. They heal faster, live longer, and have greater stamina as well as higher pain and shock tolerance. Spiritual energy makes this go, so when depleted these benefits will lessen or fail.
Spiritual Energy Transfer—cultivators can transfer raw spiritual energy to bolster someone else’s body and spirit. This can prevent death (sort of like keeping someone at 1hp unless they’re bleeding out too fast), stabilize injuries, boost the body’s natural healing, or bring mental clarity. This works better on others with a golden core as their bodies already know what to do with spiritual energy, and it’s either used either in dire straits or more generally if the other person needs more spiritual energy to work with for a spell or technique.
Gusu Lan Sword Techniques—Jingyi knows his way around a weapon and can also use his sword when there’s no spiritual energy involved. When spiritual energy techniques are applied, however, a sword can also be telekinetically controlled as well as throw spiritual energy attacks/shockwaves. Jingyi can also fly on his sword (slower than an airplane, faster than a horse) by, more or less, surfing on it and can maybe carry a passenger for a short time before he exhausts himself. This would be subject to the flying restriction re: Prisma’s worldbuilding.
Gusu Lan Guqin Techniques—using an instrument (usually a guqin, for Jingyi as one of the Lan sect), music can be imbued with spiritual energy, and when imbued, various songs have various effects. Jingyi knows the basic principles of some of them, but he’s not very good at any of them—yet, at least—and usually opts for other methods. Various songs can cause energy shockwaves, assist in clearing the mind, call the dead, calm the dead, and allow attempts to speak with the souls of the dead/near-dead through a musical language known as Qin.
Talisman Creation—talismans are spiritual energy-imbued sigils that can inspire various effects. The effect is proportional to the energy used and they can be prepared ahead of time. Effects that Jingyi knows how to achieve: attract/repel ghosties and other creatures, directly protect someone from ghosties and other creatures, calm or agitate ghosties and other creatures, detect presences in designated areas, create light and heat, and set things on fire and/or explode in various aesthetic ways. Jingyi does not often remember to use talismans, but he can both use and create them.
INVENTORY:
1: Qiankun Pouch - essentially a bag of holding/spatial storage item that looks like a small, fancy blue and white bag embroidered with clouds.
2: One cultivator’s spiritual sword of a type called a jian. His doesn’t have a canon name, though it does theoretically have one.
3: One set of GusuLan junior disciple cultivator robes with head-ribbon. Sewn with single-use protective talisman stitching good against ghosties and other types of dead.
4: One stack of talisman paper that Jingyi can use to pre-prepare talismans.
5: Compass of Evil. Points toward the greatest source of resentful energy (ie strongest ghost/dead) or the strongest monster in an area. Very useful but surprisingly unreliable.
MOONBLESSING: Sanguis
